The SNP has welcomed the result of another poll showing strong support for independence in the aftermath of the UK’s vote for Brexit – with the poll suggesting around 500,000 people who voted No in 2014 have switched to back independence.

The new poll by Survation for the Daily Record shows support for independence has grown to 54 per cent – and follows two more polls over the weekend showing independence in the lead.

Commenting, SNP Business Convener Derek Mackay MSP said:

“This poll is a strong endorsement of the actions of the First Minister and shows that when faced with the choice between being taken out of the EU against our will by a right wing Tory government, or continuing as outward looking, independent members of the European Union more and more people are open to the possibilities independence brings.

“At a time when the government and parties across the UK are in chaos, this poll shows people back Nicola Sturgeon’s strong and stable leadership and support her decision to ensure a second independence referendum is firmly on the table and to explore all options to protect Scotland’s relationship with Europe.”
